IBM today launched it’s long awaited Power7 chip and the systems based on Power7.
Power7 chip includes 8 cores in a single chip package, this new Power7 chip is the IBM’s next big step in processor development. The advantage of the Power7 chips is each core can execute 4 tasks (threads), so Power7 is virtually 33 core processor.
Also IBM announced 3 systems with Power7 processor:
1. IBM Power 780: a new category of scalable, high-end servers, featuring an advanced modular design with up to 64 Power7 cores.
2. IBM Power 770: a midrange system with up to 64 Power7 cores, featuring higher performance per core than Power6 processors and using up to 70 percent less energy for the same number of cores as Power6 processors.
3. IBM Power 755: a high-performance computing cluster node with 32 Power7 cores.
Additionally, Power7 based systems can be used in high end transaction platforms such as smart electrical grids..
